Orlando injury attorneys note a slight decrease in deaths from car accidents. A new report from the U.S. Department of Transportation says the number of car accident fatalities was down slightly in 2017.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car accidents killed 37,133 in America. Though still an appalling number, it is a decrease of almost 2 percent from the year before.
“Dangerous actions such as speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence are still putting many Americans, their families and those they share the road with at risk,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi R. King. “Additionally, we must address the emerging trend of drug-impaired driving to ensure we are reducing traffic fatalities and keeping our roadways safe for the traveling public.”
Elain Chao, United States Secretary of Transportation, said that most car accidents and injuries are caused by human error.
Secretary Chao, “This week the Department released the 2017 traffic fatalities data. Historically, human error has been a factor in 94% of fatal crashes, which automated technology could help address.”

Orlando Injury Attorneys Familiar with Accident Causes
According to News Six Orlando, distracted driving caused more than 50,000 car accidents in Florida alone. And, News Six says, Orange County is generally a dangerous place to drive a car. In fact, Orange County ranked worst in the state for distracted driving deaths. As a result, Orlando injury attorneys are seeing more and more cases resulting from people hurt by a driver who wasn’t paying attention to the road.
For the most part, those deaths and injuries are preventable. “Dialing a phone number while driving increases a teen’s risk of crashing by six times, and texting while driving increases the risk by 23 times,” according to the NHTSA.
