Most Hurt in a Car Accident Because of Driver Error

hurt in a car accident

Looking to reduce the number of people who get hurt in a car accident, the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) is rolling out a new safety campaign. The Department is imagining a future in which no one is killed or injured on American roadways.

The new focus will be on human behavior, infrastructure, safety regulation in the automobile and transportation sectors, and the emergency responders who will support this strategy.

It’s admittedly a long way to zero deaths and injuries on America’s roadways, so in the meantime, personal injury attorneys will continue to fight for the rights of people injured through carelessness or negligence. How to Avoid Getting Hurt in a Car Accident

The U.S. DOT is calling its new program the Safe System Approach, calling it “an effective way to address and mitigate the risks inherent in our enormous and complex transportation system. It works by building and reinforcing multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes from happening in the first place and minimize the harm caused to those involved when crashes do occur. It is a holistic and comprehensive approach that provides a guiding framework to make places safer for people.”

The approach is founded on some basic principles. The first is that the current situation on our roadways is unacceptable and that eliminating death and injury from car accidents is the ultimate goal. The other main point is that “Humans Make Mistakes,” an acknowledgment that most people get killed or hurt in a car accident because of driver error. According to the DOT, “the three most frequent and persistent behavioral safety factors in fatal crashes” are:

  • People in motor vehicles not wearing seat belts
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol
  • Speeding

The program will also focus on road design to help mitigate dangerous or unsafe driving behaviors. The design of roads greatly affects how people make use of them and can help reduce the impact of bad driving habits. The use of roundabouts for example, instead of traditional intersections, cuts down on the number of people who get hurt in a car accident.
