Nelson cited a newly released government audit of the National Highway Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA). A report by the Office of Inspector General for the U.S Department of Transportation says “NHTSA’s lack of internal accountability and risk-based oversight inhibits the agency’s ability to meet its safety mission.” In other words, regulators are not doing enough to get unsafe cars off the road.
