Car Accident Statistics

Car accident statistics

Car Accident Statistics, according to Value Penguin, can add up to a lot of pain, suffering, and expense. There are about 5 million car accidents in the United States every year, with over 35,000 deaths and millions of serious injuries.

Last year, US traffic fatalities reached a 16-year high. Nearly 43,000 people died in car accidents on America’s roadways in 2021, a 10% increase over the previous year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA) a division of the Department of Transportation says those fatalities include pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and passengers.

“Fatalities from multivehicle crashes and those on urban roadways both rose 16%, according to the agency, the largest year-over-year increases for incident-specific data. Other notable increases included: fatalities of those 65 years or older, up 14%; pedestrian deaths, up 13%; and fatalities in crashes involving at least one large truck, up 13%,” the NHTSA said.

Car Accident Statistics Prompt Call to Action

“This crisis on our roads is urgent and preventable,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, NHTSA’s Deputy Administrator. “We will redouble our safety efforts, and we need everyone – state and local governments, safety advocates, automakers, and drivers – to join us. All of our lives depend on it.”

The NHTSA recently announced a technical assistance program designed to help states take action to address the increase in death and injury on the highway. The program includes the Click It or Ticket campaign, which raises awareness about the fact that seat belts save lives. The federal government also urged states to use the cash allocated to execute safety initiatives and strengthen collaborations with safety organizations to reduce risky driving behaviors. The programs use car accident statistics to identify ways to prevent death and injury on the highway.

According to the Click It or Ticket program, car accident statistics show that nearly 11,000 unbuckled passengers were killed in car accidents in the US in 2020. Young adults were among the groups most likely to be killed in a crash while not wearing a seat belt.
