Bike Crash Statistics

bike crash statistics

According to bike crash statistics, Florida is the most dangerous place in America to ride a bicycle. In fact, the data shows that Florida leads the US in bicycle fatalities. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV) reported that there were 183 fatal bicycle accidents in the state last year, out of the more than 6,000 bicycle accidents across Florida.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, bicycle fatalities across the country have been steadily on the rise for years. While there were 682 fatal bicycle accidents in America in 2011, there were 938 in 2020. Florida continues to have the greatest number of bicycle accident fatalities in the country. The majority of bicycle deaths in Florida happened in those aged 50 to 59, primarily in metropolitan areas.

Making Sense of Bike Crash Statistics

A report from AAA Florida notes that, according to bike crash statistics, bicycle deaths make up 2% of Florida traffic fatalities. “Motorists and cyclists play an equal part in sharing the road,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “While motorists need to eliminate distractions and watch for people on bikes, cyclists can do their part by wearing a helmet and bright colored clothing.”

Florida AAA says that common factors in bicycle fatalities include:

  • Failure to yield right of way — 38%
  • Not visible (dark clothing, no lighting, etc.) — 10%
  • Failure to obey traffic signs, signals, or officer — 8%
  • Making improper turn — 8%

According to a recent AAA survey of Florida cyclists:

  • 36% do not wear a helmet while riding a bicycle
  • 56% ride with traffic; 21% ride against traffic
  • 74% of those who ride against traffic do so because they prefer to see approaching vehicles

“Bicyclists who do not go with the flow of traffic are putting their lives in danger,” Jenkins continued. “Although it may be more comforting for a cyclist to see approaching motorists, this creates scenarios where drivers may not see them. That’s because drivers do not always check for wrong-way traffic before entering an intersection. Traffic laws and safety recommendations are there to help protect you the next time you take a spin.”
