This month’s Consumer Product Safety Commission press release announced a significant Florida Federal Court sentence. The President of an Import Co. pleaded guilty to violating US consumer product safety laws, and received a sentence involving Federal Prison time.
The case involved the importing of banned children’s products which presented the risk of “..choking, aspiration, and ingestion.” and some with lead content above the federal limits. This case included involvement form the Departments of Justice, and HomeLand Security. It is comforting to know that different Agencies are enforcing laws to protect consumers.
Product Liability has been a very important issue for many years. Consumer products cause thousands of deaths, millions of injuries and countless dollar amounts of damages to property. Even with all the laws in place to protect us, many defective and dangerous products still get into the hands of consumers.
The Law is on your side, manufacturers, importers, distributors and others involved in the sale of defective or banned products are all liable for any injuries or damages caused by their products. Consumer Product Suits are still common, many are class action suits when the damages or injuries affect a large number of consumers.
