Florida healthcare executives and their corporate lobbyists are fighting hard against a proposal to protect the rights of nursing home residents. Brecht Heuchan, a lawyer and political consultant who is a member of Florida's Constitution Revision Commission, wants to add a "nursing home residents bill of rights" to the state constitution. The amendment would go before the voters in November if commissioners approve the measure. A 40-year-old Georgia truck driver died in a SunRail crash when a train smashed into his semi tractor trailor. In order to reach the loading dock where he was delivering fencing material, Stephen Chambers had moved his truck onto the tracks. Medical boards rarely discipline negligent Florida doctors who are sued for malpractice, according to a story in the South Florida SunSentinal. The law requires the state Department of Health to review every Florida malpractice lawsuit in order to track dangerous doctors. But the newspaper's investigation found that regulators disciplined only 128 doctors in ten years of reviewing almost 24,000 cases.
