Accutane is manufactured by Roche Laboratories and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1982 to treat severe, disfiguring cystic acne. “Resistant nodular cystic” acne is painful, disfiguring, and unresponsive to other treatments including antibiotics. A synthetic derivative of Vitamin A, Accutane is to be taken orally over the course of several months. The drug works by causing oil glands to shrink and diminish their oil production. While the medication has been very effective in treating acne in patients, the benefits are often outweighed by the significant health risks that Accutane poses.

According to the FDA’s database, Accutane is one of the top three drugs with the most reported side effects. Even before its approval, testing linked Accutane to fetal anomalies in animals. Other serious health issues associated with Accutane include birth defects and fetal death; psychiatric problems including suicide; damage to the liver, kidneys, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and autoimmune system. Some research indicates that Accutane increases the risk of colon cancer. Because of the varied and dangerous side effects associated with the drug, physicians must diligently monitor their Accutane patients through frequent blood testing.

Accutane has been before the FDA more than twenty times because of its serious side effects. Whether you are considering a personal injury lawsuit or a wrongful death claim, it is important to have the guidance and resources of a legal team who specializes in personal injury, product liability, and wrongful death claims. FDA Issues Increased Restrictions on Accutane

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday unveiled new restrictions for Accutane, a drug indicated for the treatment of a specific type of severe acne that is not responsive to other therapies.

Consumer advocate group Public Citizen told the FDA that the acne drug Accutane, which causes birth defects and life-threatening adverse events, should be removed from the market and prescribed only under very limited and controlled conditions.
